CHILE

New Zealand and Chile business ties

Chile is New Zealand second-largest trade partner in Latin America, with two-way goods and services trade totalling NZ$311.8 million in 2018. We have business and commercial links in areas including agriculture, technology, mining and retail.

New Zealand and Chile share a common belief in trade liberalisation through the WTO, are both APEC members, and are also both members of the Cairns Group which works to free up agricultural trade internationally. New Zealand has been an active observer of the regional Pacific Alliance and is currently seeking an associate membership. Both countries are also signatories to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Due to our trade agreements and relationships, similar population sizes and Chile’s location within Latin America, many New Zealand businesses choose to enter the wider region through Chile as a first market.

We have extensive cooperation in agriculture, including training and commercial agritech arrangements, and are cooperating to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector as members of the Global Research Alliance.
